Once upon a time... 46 years ago !
"I learnt Italian to speak with the Pope, Spanish to communicate with my mother, English to talk to my aunt, German for my friends and French just for myself."
Emperor Charles 5th
Mr. Victor Nélis opened the Maison des Langues Vivantes over 45 years ago, in October of 1960, on the Rue du Midi 25, in Brussels. During the Golden Sixties, Mr Nelis was one of the few people who thought languages would be more and more essential for peace and communication.
At that time, most people adhered to the notion of a unique language to be spoken by everybody.
But, nowadays, the more time flies, the more languages become an important part of diplomacy and business.
Consequently, for over 45 years the bookshop has devoted itself to finding new products and to promoting and informing people about languages.
Travelling around the world on the Net, we discover new products everyday and we test the methods and CD-ROMs to be sure of their technical and pedagogical qualities.
Our activities -since the beginning without any competition- quickly made our reputation. Clients came and continue to come by word-of-month. Furthermore, with the help of our colleagues, the local bookshops close to you, we have been able to extended our activities well beyond the borders of Belgium.
Our philosophy has never been to sell you something at all costs ; rather, our primary interest is to find THE BOOK YOU WANT, to be able to GIVE YOU the information you need to make your selection, and to share with you our passion for the wonderful work of the publishers, our partners. We sell to private customers, to schools and to companies, either at our shop or by mail. We also sell to other bookshops, sometimes acting as the commercial representative for international publishers in Belgium.
The bookshop is open, for purchasing or getting advice, from 10am-6pm, Tuesday to Friday, and from 10am to 5.30pm on Saturdays.
